Dinner date escorts in Milan — aperitivo first

In Milan the dinner is the second act. The first is the aperitivo, and a dinner date that skips it has missed the thing the city does best. Here is how the evening is built, where it works, and where it very much does not.

Milan is the best-dressed city in Europe and one of the smallest, and both facts shape a dinner here. Everyone looks; nobody stares. The table next to you may know your host. And the evening has a structure that visitors keep getting wrong by arriving two hours late.

The structure

Aperitivo, from seven. A drink and the small plates that come with it, standing or sitting, somewhere with people. It is how the Milanese open an evening and how a companion and a client stop being strangers before the table. Half an hour to an hour. Camparino in the Galleria if you want the institution; a hotel bar if you want the quiet.

Dinner, at half past eight or nine. Earlier than Madrid, later than London. Restaurants fill from eight thirty; the good tables are nine o’clock ones.

After. A last drink, somewhere low-lit, until midnight or one. On a weekday that is where the evening ends. On a Friday or during the big weeks, it is where it starts.

A four-hour arrangement that works: she meets you at seven, dinner at half past eight, and you are leaving the table around eleven. If you want the drink afterwards, book five.

A note on Mondays: a surprising number of Milan’s best rooms are closed. Check before you plan an evening around one.

Choosing the room

Where Milan goes to be seen. Langosteria, Giacomo, the terrace at Ceresio 7 and their kind. Superb, and on any given night they hold the people who run the city’s fashion houses and banks. Perfect if you want to be noticed with someone striking. A poor choice if you would rather not explain her to a colleague at the next table.

The grand classics. The old dining rooms of the centre: white jackets, tables far apart, waiters who have seen four decades of this. Formal, quiet, nobody looked at twice.

The hotel dining rooms and gardens. Seta at the Mandarin Oriental, the garden at the Bulgari, the Four Seasons’ courtyard. An international crowd, staff discreet by training, and arriving together from the lobby raises no question at all. The safe default, and in summer the gardens are the loveliest rooms in the city.

Brera. Small restaurants on small streets, a walk home afterwards. Less formal, more charming, and where most of our dinner dates end up.

Book the table yourself, in your own name. The famous tasting-menu tables are booked weeks ahead and, in Design Week, months. We cannot produce one for Friday, and nor can anyone who says they can.

What she wears

This is the city that invented dressing well without appearing to try, and she will dress accordingly: elegant, understated, expensive in the way that is only visible to people who know. No labels on display. Tell us the venue and it is handled:

  • The grand hotels and the classics — a dress, heels, a good coat in winter. Black, navy, camel.
  • Brera and the see-and-be-seen rooms — polished but relaxed. The city’s own uniform.
  • La Scala — formal, and on the opening night in December, strictly so.
  • A box at San Siro, the Grand Prix, a Fashion Week show, a Design Week party — each has its own register. Say which, and she will look as though she belongs there, because she will.

At the table, Milan version

Language. English is normal in the rooms we use, and most of our companions are comfortable in it; several speak Italian. If the dinner is with Italian colleagues, tell us — a companion who can follow the table is a different match from one who smiles through it.

Introductions. Two kisses when she is introduced, with men and women alike. Then a handshake for business; the Milanese are formal in the first five minutes and warm after.

The coperto. A small cover charge appears on every Italian bill. It is not a tip and not a mistake.

The bill. You ask for it — il conto — and it comes to you. Tipping is modest: rounding up, or five percent at a serious restaurant.

Running into someone. Likelier here than almost anywhere if you work in Milan. Introduce her by first name; she will take it from there. Give her a line beforehand if you want a particular one.

When dinner is not a dinner

A good share of what we arrange here is an event with a dinner inside it: a Fashion Week show and the party after, a Design Week opening, a box at San Siro, an evening at La Scala, the Grand Prix weekend at Monza, a client dinner during one of the fairs at Rho. Tell us which. Each has a dress code and a rhythm of its own, and some of them run very late indeed.

If the evening runs on

Message us from the table and it is arranged in minutes. An overnight that begins after dinner is the usual way a Milan evening extends — and if there is a second night, the lake is an hour away.

Booking one

The date, the room if you have chosen one, the language at the table, and whether anyone there might know you. Two or three names come back, with photographs — chosen for that table, not pulled from a list.
